Description:
In support of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Marty Harding, director of training and consultation services at Hazelden Publishing and Colleen Gallopin, director of training and technical assistance at Break the Cycle, will present a one hour web conference on teen dating violence using the evidence-based model, Respect WORKS!. In addition to introducing and explaining the components of the Respect WORKS! Program, this online event will educate participants on what dating violence is; the consequences for students and schools; and state laws that are currently enacted to prevent and respond to teen dating violence. Some of the latest facts about this issue show:
• In the United States, about 12 percent of high school students report having been physically victimized by a dating partner in the previous year. In some areas of the country, this is as high as 40 percent.
• About one in four high school students report having been psychologically abused by a dating partner in the previous year.
• Gay male and female adolescents are victims of physical and psychological dating abuse about as often as heterosexual adolescents.
• Dating abuse is beginning as early as the sixth grade.
• Adults who use violence with their dating partners often begin so during adolescence, with the first episode typically occurring by age fifteen.
• Young women between the ages of fourteen and seventeen represent 38 percent of those victimized by date rape.
The conference will take place on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. central time and will introduce concerned parents, educators, and community leaders to a comprehensive model that will help schools and community organizations prevent and reduce teen dating violence.
